Market Review:

It was a volatile week on Wall Street, with major indexes closing lower despite a strong Friday rally after November’s PCE inflation data came in cooler than expected.

Yesterday, the Dow Jones Industrial Average surged 1.2% on Friday after cooler-than-expected inflation data helped ease some market fears. The S&P 500 rose 1.1%, and the Nasdaq gained just over 1%.

However, all three major indices posted weekly losses, with the Dow dropping 2.3%, the S&P 500 falling 2%, and the Nasdaq losing 1.8%. The week's volatility was sparked by the Federal Reserve's reduced outlook for rate cuts, alongside stubborn inflation concerns.

Market Preview:

The coming holiday week will be an abbreviated one for Wall Street. But several key economic reports are still on the docket, starting with December's consumer confidence data on Monday. On Tuesday, investors will watch November's durable goods orders and new home sales figures.

Markets will be closed on Wednesday for Christmas. But the fun will resume on Thursday, when initial jobless claims for the previous week will be released. Finally, Friday will bring November's retail and wholesale inventories.

Talk about over-concentration…

But if one stock is carrying the whole market, the real question isn’t, “What if it never existed?” It’s, “What if its strength gives out?”
