TOMORROW’S TRADE IDEA, TODAY

Like College Football? You Might Like Disney Too

More Games, More Ads

This football season is the first one with the expanded 12-team college football playoff. That means late-season games remain meaningful for more teams — and viewership is up as a result.

In fact, Disney’s (DIS) TV stations that air college football games — including ESPN, ESPN2, and ABC — are all on pace for their highest viewership since 2016.

Consequently, advertisers have seen an increase in engagement for their in-game commercials, according to ad data company EDO — which may be great news for Disney too.

Effective Advertising

EDO reported that viewers were 11% more likely to engage with ads during games aired on Disney than the average for cable prime-time games.

In turn, those time slots are becoming more valuable to advertisers, which could potentially mean more ad revenue for Disney.

The good news doesn’t stop there. EDO also found that ads aired on Disney broadcasts were 93% more effective last year than programming happening at the same time on other networks, another checkbox for brands deciding where to direct their ad spend.

Wheeling and Dealing

Disney has already sold out its ad spots for all of the conference championship games it is airing, as well as roughly 95% of its ad slots for College Football Playoff games.

But the boost might go beyond this season. In March, ESPN and the College Football Playoff announced a 6-year, $7.8-billion-dollar deal that will have the networks airing the games through 2032. Warner Bros. Discovery also sublicensed the rights to the first-round and quarterfinal playoff games from ESPN for five years.

Disney appears to be turning into a college football juggernaut at a time when the league’s popularity is peaking — and could be poised to remain one for the rest of the decade.

This trend may be worth tuning into, for football fans and investors alike.
