TOMORROW’S TRADE IDEA, TODAY

Follow the Dollar

Trade War Winner?

President Donald Trump appears resolved to wage a trade war on the world, and stocks have been considerably volatile as a result.

But Citi $C ( ▲ 1.76% ) believes one unlikely retailer could come out a winner: Dollar Tree $DLTR ( ▼ 2.59% )

Analyst Paul Lejuez recently upgraded the stock from Neutral to Buy, and raised his price target to $103 price share, representing a 48% upside from today’s close.

Small Changes, Big Upside

Lejuez said he was not surprised to see Dollar Tree’s stock drop after the tariff announcement. After all, around 50% of its products will be subject to the tariffs.

However, he thinks that Dollar Tree business won't see as much impact as that implies. Its products are cheap, and tariffs may only raise their prices by around 50 cents, Lejuez predicts.

This could be offset by a change the discount retail chain is already making. The company has been in the process of raising prices incrementally, thanks to its Dollar Tree Plus initiative, which aims to increase price points to $2-$5.

Raising Prices Anyway

The analyst also believes that, with uncertainty growing and recessionary concerns re-emerging, the economic environment is likely to drive consumers to seek out bargain shopping.

This could be an ideal scenario for Dollar Tree. It’s also a big part of why the company has remained in the green amid a variety of economic and market environments, including the 2008 financial crisis and the pandemic crash.

If Citi is correct, investors looking for green in a sea of red may just need to follow the Dollar.
