THE MIDDAY TRADE

Taking Advantage of Trends

As the US transitions toward natural gas from traditional fuels such as coal, investors may be able to take advantage of the shift, according to PGIM.

The firm's VP, Shehriyar Antia, claims natural gas is more viable than wind and solar energy. He believes natural gas is both highly dispatchable and low-cost, things that wind and solar do not offer. It also burns cleaner than other fossil fuel options.

Pipeline Over Production

According to Antia, investors will be better served putting their capital into the major pipeline companies rather than the natural gas producers. This will help investors avoid exposure to commodity prices, which are typically very volatile.

Additionally, pipeline companies typically pay dividends and offer capital appreciation, potentially checking both the growth and income boxes as investments.

Stock Picks

Two stocks that Antia likes are Williams Companies (WMB) and Kinder Morgan (KMI). The stocks are up 20% and 12% YTD, respectively. Additionally, WMB offers a 4.5% dividend yield and KMI’s is at 5.8%.

The world is always looking for ways to get greener, and it seems that natural gas is going to be a big part of that. These companies provide crucial infrastructure to the industry while avoiding a lot of the risk associated with the ever-fluctuating price of the gas itself.

Yesterday, the EU implemented its tariff hike on Chinese EVs. On top of the 10% duty already placed on imported EVs, Chinese manufacturers will now face tariffs ranging from 17.4% to 37.6%.

Amid all this, China has launched anti-dumping investigations into European pork and brandy. However, the Chinese Ministry of Commerce claims this has no connection to Europe’s EV restrictions.
